remarkable developments. all along we thought it would be between the obama white house and house speaker john boehner and there was a logic behind that. because getting legislation out of the house is the trickier part of crafting any type of deal. but with the house saying look, we need the senate to do something, the last ditch effort is occurring in the senate right now. i spoke to staffers close to senator mcconnell that said there was optimism on their side yesterday, including from their boss, senator minority leader mitch mcconnell to get a deal. of course, any kind of word in reading from the members themselves will not come until tomorrow, but it's both chris and luke that said in the segment before mine, there is a sense that what might have been optimism yesterday does not exist today. of course, that is what always goes on when you have negotiations. we will see what happens tomorrow. tomorrow will be a very big day. >> the optimism seems to be waning. what does john boehner do if mitch mcconnell and harry reed come to an agreement? >> that is the question if something is don

with president barack obama at the white house this afternoon where they heard that if two sides do not agree on a bill the president will urge the democratic senate to put forth a measure anyway. american people will not have any patients for a politically self-inflicted wound to the economy. the economy is growing but sustaining that trend is gong to require a elected officials to do their jobs. mitch mcconnell and his democratic counterpart harry reid are supposed to keep talking tomorrow there could be a breakthrough by the end of this weekend but the president has repeatedly demanded for the extension of tax cuts below $250,000. illinois comptroller judy thinks that the impact on illinois could be as high as $1 billion if lawmakers don't strike a deal before the deadline. social security and income tax increases would lower the state's revenue by up to 5 billion. this is all coming down the pipe because we have yahoos in congress who can't sit down and to do the job. pessimism helped push stocks down friday for a fifth straight day the industrial average dropped 158 points. paul lisnek s

within our veteran population. we have been involved with the hundred days campaign to house veterans in 2012. president obama established a goal to end veteran's homelessness by 2015 which i think is doable and the department of housing and urban development came together to establish the hud slash veterans housing program which, is models after section eight and san francisco has received 500 of the vouchers to date. we have learned that our chronically homeless veterans were having a difficult time finding apartments in the private marked in fact many veterans have had vouchers issued in 1212 and so what we have here is a situation where we have a federal agency, the mayor's office and housing authority and human services agency who have focused to encourage private landlords to provide housing for these veteran and is a few months ago one of those landlords the owner of 2524 mission street came forward to offer to least his 33 stew apartments which are above the restaurant on joule which, is now the -- restaurant to least those apartments to veterans who have those vouchers and

come to a deal before december 31st. president obama met with house and senate leaders yesterday. lawmakers are hoping for a deal to help avoid tax increases for everyone as well as massive spending cuts in defense and other areas. if a deal can be reached, the senate would vote on it first and then it would head to the house. the latest the house would vote on a possible deal is january 2nd. the final full day before a new congress takes office. the house is set to return to work tomorrow night, however. speaker john boehner told fellow representatives there would be a session at 6:30 tomorrow night. he said he hopes to have a senate bill in his hand by then that they can vote on. and be sure to tune in tomorrow morning for "meet the press." david gregory will sit down with an exclusive interview with president obama. you can see "meet the press" here on nbc 4. the show starts at 10:30. >>> new this morning, many same-sex couples in the state of maine can now say they're married. that state began allowing same-sex marriages at 12:01 this morning. many places throughout the state

time ago president obama appeared in the white house briefing room with a statement. here is some of what he said. >> we had a constructive meeting today. senators reids and mcconnell are discussing a potential agreement where we can get a bipartisan bill out of the senate over to the house and done in a timely fashion so that we met the december 31st deadline. but given how things have been working in this town, we always have to wait and see until it actually happens. the one thing that the american people should not have to wait and see is some sort of action so if we don't see an agreement between the two leaders in the senate, i expect a bill to go on the floor. and i've asked senator reid to do this, put a bill on the floor that makes sure that taxes on middle-class families don't go up. that unemployment insurance is still available for 2 million people, and that lays the groundwork then for additional deficit reduction and economic growth steps that we can take in the new year. >> all of this still developing. and we will have more on all of it with mark shields and david

and spending to the future. again, in an afternoon white house meeting president obama pitch a debt plan he had outlined a week ago, prevent a tax increase for income of less than to an effective thousand dollars per year and extend long-term unemployment benefits. senate leaders are using that framework to try to craft a proposal to pass both houses of congress. aides say it would likely increase the threshold for tax increases, reversing massive pay cut from medicare doctors, and elections of millions of americans to avoid paying the alternative minimum tax. an increase in the debt ceiling is not part of the discussion. that is significant development for house republicans who won any increase in the borrowing limit it accompanied by an equal amount in spending cuts taking the debt ceiling of the table making it much easier for the scaled-down version to be negotiated. from here senate leaders will try to secure an agreement by sunday morning. if so, democrats and republicans will try to sell its house and senate members. if they can do that the voting begins. there is some progress report th
